Whenever I have trouble connecting to irc.fef.net, I try to connect directly to one of their servers instead (irc.fef.net is a sort of gateway that should connect you to the server nearest you, I think). In the past it's worked for me, so it might work for someone else in the future too. If you need a list of servers, go to http://stats.fef.net/ and there's a list of active servers. The servers are the ones called exobit.fef.net, ggn.fef.net etc. You can also see how loaded each server is, and try to avoid connecting to the ones that are very full (although I've never had much trouble with overloaded servers) or the ones that seem empty (they're usually empty for a reason).

To connect to a server, type

/server ggn.fef.net

It works in mIrc and I think it works in the java chat too. mIrc also has a built-in list of servers, which should work fine too.

oh yeah, that's a brilliant idea, Rors! well I know that Mantrid and the other mods mentioned connecting to other servers and even an IP to connect to another server but well....Xenia was a bit hectic at one point, and she wanted to do the interview quickly and didn't like the idea of letting the fans wait any longer, so she didn't want to try out anything else... that's why we started the phone chat. I can relate to her point, since she wanted to answer as many questions as possible Smile.

p.s. but I'll bookmark the link, who knows, it might be useful in the future... oh and my own Excursion Script often connects to Vendetta or GGN, I hardly am chatting on fef.net myself these days *gg* Wink.

For the Future: A great reference for JAVA ills is the HELP desk:

http://www.java.com/en/download/help/

(You can also select an alternate language on that page.)

Also something I know of personally:
Your JAVA installation on your computer could be just fine and the problem could lie with your ISP.

It could be the security protocols (or something like that) of the ISP could be blocking that particular Java portal/site/whatever from working. I had www.milx.net for an ISP and no matter what I tried could never connect to the JAVA chat and got error messages every time. When I was testing out PeoplePC ISP it connected every time on the first click. So ??? Confused Also a "web accelerator" can interfere. When I was testing out Netscape ISP with their free advertised "web accelerator" it was unable to ever connect. When I was having other problems on other sites with it I disabled it and -walla- all of a sudden everything was working and even connected to the chat using that ISP the couple of times I tried.

So you can have everything theoretically correct and still not connect is my experience. (Thought I'd pass that along. -I switched to PeoplePC ISP btw).

Maybe her internet was slow or it was because we over loaded the server.
